The Guide to Seasonal Jobs for 9 Year Olds

Why Choose a Seasonal Job?

Seasonal and temporary jobs are a great way for your son or daughter to dip their feet into the working world. If you’re worried that your child may feel overwhelmed by working while going to school and doing homework, temporary gigs are a fun way to earn cash without committing to a gig for more than a couple months.

Another reason why temp work is ideal is going back to my earlier point about how working a job is a great way to try out different jobs. If your child spends a couple months sourcing clients and raking leaves but realizes that they don’t enjoy physical labour, he or she can choose a more administrative gig for his or her next paid job.

Finding Clients When Choosing a Job

So you and your child have decided on a seasonal job. Many seasonal jobs require you and your child to find clients – for example, people who need their lawn mowed and leaves raked.

When I was a child, I had the most luck going door-to-door in my neighborhood. Spend a night or two after dinner with your child asking the neighbors if they’re in need of any seasonal services. Additionally, post some ads on Facebook Marketplace.

Another ideal way to maximize clients is to be flexible with what services you offer. If your son or daughter is interested and willing to do a variety of services and jobs, they’ll increase their chances of finding work!

Why Choose an Online Job?

So your child wants to work online. Fair enough! In the digital age, it only makes sense why they want to make money online. Choosing an online gig has a number of benefits for both your and your child. Years ago, you had to leave your home to make money. My first informal gigs were raking leaves and shovelling snow and my first official job was working at a cinnamon bun shop in a shopping mall. While your child can still work in-person, choosing an online job has a number of benefits, including:

  • Saving time by eliminating commuting via car, bus or on foot
  • Flexibility in what your child wears – if he or she despises wearing a uniform and loves wearing pajamas, many jobs allow you to wear whatever you want!
  • Developing technical skills including troubleshooting technology, operating a video camera and microphone and practicing video phone call etiquitte
  • Saving you time as the parent – you won’t need to drop your child off or pick them up multiple times a week!
